remake of an older movie : this is a remake of the original appleseed and just seem like the original to be a bit weak in the storyline but it does look a lot better than the original
essential anime : Wow. I was amazed at the opening sequence of this film which outshines the brilliant opening of 'Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within' - the realistic kinetics of the human and 'mecha' characters is breathtaking. The 3-D computer generated animation is aided by motion capture and stylised with cell-shading to give it a clear association with previous anime such as 'Ghost in the Shell'. Sometimes the back drops are almost photo-real. This is real eye-candy stuff all the way through.
That's the hyperbole about the graphics over and done with, now I am going to have to try and justify why I gave this 5 stars and the 'Final Fanstay VII: Advent Children' only got 2! Well basically it's like this - I am a sucker for the work of Shirow Masamume whereas I think Squaresoft or whatever they call their film off-shoot are just trying to milk a franchise for all it's worth. If I was to compare the two films I'd say this film is not only visually far superior but it also has an interesting plot which isn't jut one big drawn out fight between the good guys and the bad guys. In fact at times it is really unclear who the good guys are and I enjoyed feeling unsure of how the story was going to turn out. The plot also makes you stop and think about the nature of humanity and what it means to be human in a very similar way the new series of 'Battlestar Galactica'.
It may not be true to the Manga but then this version of 'Appleseed' stands out in it's own right as an Anime milestone in terms of the excellent production and has had a clear influence on such films as 'Ultraviolet' and 'Natural City'. If you like kick-ass robot tanks and sci-fi kung-fu shenanigans you will love this film.
Brilliant : I was unsure what to expect from this film and was unsure as to whether or not i would like it however after watching it all doubts were removed, this is a brilliant film.
The graphics of this film are done in an interesting way, all the backgrounds are done in a realistic fashion while all the characters are cel shaded to give a very nice look and feel to the film. One scene showed the characters on a beach and the camera looks out over the water, the sea in this scene is so briliantly animated and rendered that you could be forgiven for thinking that it was real.
The Storyline has been slated in some earlier reviews however i found it to be a brilliant storyline that kept you guessing as to the motives and intentions of a lot of the charachters, I watched this with a friend (see the review below for his opinion) and we were discussion who was good and who was bad in the film and guessing at how the plot was going to turn out and both of us got it wrong and didnt forsee how the story would pan out.
I would recommend this to any fan of films.
Wow! : I watched this film with a good friend, see his comments above!!! :-)
At some points whilst watching this film I couldn't help but think that some of the backgrounds were real rather than CGI - such is the quality of the work on this film. Attention to detail is paramount when trying to capture realistic backgrounds, and they have pulled it off well with this film.
Contrasting with the realistic backgrounds, the characters have been made to look like 'traditional' anime characters, and this gives the film a clean look.
Some people have suggested that the story is a bit lacklustre, but I found it to be pretty good. The story manages to deal with deep issues such as racism by showing the prejudice which has brewed between humans and Biodroids simply because they differ from us. The forced sterilisation of Biodroids reeked of Nazism and raised this film above that of a simple blood and guts anime feature.
Throw in a mix of deep-rooted emotion and childhood angst, and you get one of the best Anime films I've seen for a long time.
Complete and utter rubbish! : To be fair the visuals are pretty stunning but as you all know if the story is poor than that counts for nothing, which is the case here. You just don't feel attached to the characters and couldn't care less what happens to them in the end. So on the whole i really wouldn't recommend watching it.
