Music and Lyrics [2007] - £8.97

Music & Lyrics is frothy and sweet, like the top of a perfect cappuccino shared a deux. Hugh Grant is a self-professed "happy has-been," playing his befuddled, adorable persona more spot-on than he has since Four Weddings and a Funeral. As Alex, former member of an '80s pop band who years later is playing at water parks and high school reunions, he's settled into a life of lesser expectations. Drew Barrymore, quietly radiant, is Sophie, the underachieving girl Friday who arrives to water--make that overwater--Alex's plants--and to explode him out of that comfy rut. If the plot's a bit farfetched, it matters not, since the two lead characters are so likable--and make such beautiful music together. Big bonus: the supportive role of Kristen Johnston as Rhonda, Sophie's older sis (and longtime Alex fan) whose hilarious performance threatens to steal the show whenever she's onscreen. (The owner of a chain of successful weight-loss centers, Rhonda tries to comfort a rattled Sophie: "Want to do some stress eating?") The film also marks the remarkable debut of Haley Bennett, who plays a pop star of Britney/Cristina proportions with deadpan sincerity radiating through her skimpy outfits and mega-extensions. As Alex and Sophie work on crafting musical magic, something else is taking hold. It's music to the ears of anyone needing a sweet romantic comedy that hits all the right notes. --A.T. Hurley

Eminently watchable, undemanding and fun : Well this one has got mixed reviews hasn't it? Obviously these things are a matter of taste, but I couldn't see that this was any differnt to others in the genre and every bit as good as most. There is more sweet and less bitter than About a Boy, for example, but in a good way. Just watch and enjoy for 90 minutes, it can't hurt!

awful : Usually I like Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, but I must say this is just terrible. I think it only deserves 1 star. The plot was more overused than any I've seen, just a little different in that it's about music this time. It wasn't even very funny. I'm a fan of RomCom's most of the time, but the last few I've seen have been awful. Want to see either of these actors in decent films, then check out About a Boy or A Cinderella Story, don't bother with this.

Rom-com's don't have to make sense! : I watched this on the plane and made a complete fool of myself by laughing aloud. Frequently. (Don't you hate it when no one else in the vicinity is wearing headphones?!) It is frothy and would never happen in real life, but isn't that what romantic comedies are all about? Hugh Grant is lovely in this, with none of the usual arrogance associated with his typical characters. Drew Barrymore is as always fabulous if a bit eccentric. I really really enjoyed this and so will anyone who is up for some light-hearted laughs and a bit of romance.

Music & Lyrics : I thought this was utter nonsense. Hugh Grant played Hugh Grant as usual. Drew Barrymore was better but the film was just plain boring. If you want a good romcom watch Holiday instead.

Loved it : I guess you know that it will have some happiness at the end but that's not a bad thing! I watched it with my wife and 15 year old son and we all enyoyed it. It's funny and entertaining so rent or buy and enjoy some family time. Ste
