Romeo And Juliet -
While perhaps not the defining moment in the making of Leonardo DiCaprio's career, his appearance in this dazzling take on William Shakepeare's Romeo & Juliet back in 1996 did the careers of both Clare Danes and himself no harm at all. Perhaps the real star of the show here though is director Baz Luhrmann, who employs a frenetic, at times downright-brilliant style to the age-old tale of tale of star-crossed lovers. Luhrmann would go on to make Moulin Rouge a few years' later.
From the off, his take on Romeo & Juliet explodes unpredictably onto the screen, bubbling with vision and originality, accompanied throughout by an excellent score and soundtrack that rightly spawned two spin-off CDs. There are sacrifices made along the way to support Luhrmann's vision though, with the text being stripped down to leave the core of the story in tact, and that's just one of a number of complaints that Shakespeare purists may have.
And yet, perhaps more than any other attempt to bring the work of the Bard to the screen of late, this is an extremely accessible entry-point to Shakepeare's work. That it's also by turns breathtaking, dazzling and a sheer joy to watch doesn't harm its cause either. The two leads are charming, the support cast backs them up superbly, and the end result is one of the most interesting visual treats that Hollywood mustered up throughout the 1990s.--Simon Brew

THE CAST ARE TO DIE FOR, THE MUSIC IS AMAZING, THE NEW TAKE ON IT IS SPELL BLINDING AN INSTANT CLASSIC FORGET ALL THAT HAS GONE BEFORE THIS IS WHERE IT IS AT...
Very good modern version of Shakespeare's classic : Very good modern version of Shakespeare's classic. Everything enacted as in the play except the settings plus I doubt if the lead pair were as good looking as Di Caprio and Danes.A very defining film in that Di Caprio and the director Baz Luhrmann moved on albeit separately to bigger projects such as Titanic, Aviator and of course Titanic.
Best Movie Of All Time : This film really shouldn't work but it does!
Set in a modern world using the language of Shakespeare with excellent direction from Baz Luhrman ,the film is pacy and poignant and is a highly original take on Romeo and Juliet.
I watch it time and time again it gets better every time.
I rate it as the best film I have ever seen ( and I've seen a lot)!
Great Film : This really is an excellent version of shakespeares romeo and juliet. They have used the language of the time really effectively in the modern day. This is one of my favourite films I recommend buying it.
One word: amazing : At first I didn't think a modern day ' Romeo and Juliet ' would work, but when I had to watch it at school for my GCSE English I was very, very impressed.
At home I got to watch all of the film, it was so powerful and heart renching, heartbreaking and intoxicating even; Shakespeare's words set against the modern world, it worked so well.
Leonardo Dicaprio and Claire Danes are convincing leads, Leonardo Dicaprio is a lovesick, desperate and passionate Romeo, while Claire Danes is an innocent and lovely Juliet. The supporting cast is also superb.
I love how the director has put it all together; he makes things eye catching, colourful, mad and actually very adult, so you have no choice but to watch it.
This film has also got a lot of young people into Shakespeare and I do believe that this is one of the most amazing hollywood films I've ever seen.
