The Holiday [2006] - £5.98

As a pleasant dose of holiday cheer, The Holiday is a lovable love story with all the Christmas trimmings. In the capable hands of writer-director Nancy Meyers (making her first romantic comedy since Something's Gotta Give), it all begins when two successful yet unhappy women connect through a home-swapping website, and decide to trade houses for the Christmas holiday in a mutual effort to forget their man troubles. Iris (Kate Winslet) is a London-based journalist who lives in a picture-postcard cottage in Surrey, and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) owns a movie-trailer production company (leading her to cutely imagine most of her life as a "coming attraction") and lives in a posh mansion in Beverly Hills. Iris is heartbroken from unrequited love with a cad of a colleague (Rufus Sewell), and Amanda has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend (Edward Burns), so their home-swapping offers mutual downtime to reassess their love lives. This being a Nancy Meyers movie (where everything is fabulously decorated and romantic wish-fulfillment is virtually guaranteed), Amanda hooks up with Iris's charming brother Graham (Jude Law), and Iris is unexpectedly smitten with Miles (Jack Black), a super-nice film composer on the downside of a failing relationship. --Jeff Shannon

Dreadful! : I am so glad that others have given this appalling film one star. It has to be one of the worst films I have seen recently. Normally I like mindless romantic comedies but this was so dreadfully written and acted that I was in turns bored, irritated and amazed that the writer who had penned the superb Something's Gotta Give (which I'd give 4 stars) wrote this drivel. The presence of a strong female character was contrary to the message Meyers was purportedly trying convey in her sub-story about great films of the 40s and 50s. Kate Winslet was whiney, tearful and grating even when supposedly finding her inner strength. Cameron Diaz was meant to be some kind of ice maiden in relationships and yet couldn't even manage to throw her cheating boyfriend out of the house effectively without seeming like a ditz. The stereotypical England that always has to be in US-produced films was there - of course we all live in cute chocolate-box houses, drive minis and yes it snows beautifully in Surrey every winter.

I just can't see the point of this film. What was it trying to achieve? Meyers would have been better trying to concentrate either on the sub-plot about the disappearance of the old film industry OR putting her energies into scripting a half-decent romantic comedy. Instead what we get is a mish-mash that doesn't do anything except annoy and bore.

A complete disappointment. If you haven't yet seen Something's Gotta Give, rent or buy that instead - it is superior in every way to this tripe.

I wouldn't normally bother writing but . . . . . : . . . . . this film, in my opinion, is dreadful. I don't normally leave a review unless something is really good, but I wanted to save other people the bother of buying or renting this film and then wasting an hour and a half watching it! I agree with all the other reviewers who didn't like it . . . . there's not much more to add!!!

Overacted & full of stereotypes... : I'm quite partial to a decent chickflick, so I was expecting an hour & a half's pleasant distraction with this film. I was wrong.

To be fair, I was only able to stomach the first half hour of this before switching it off. It may have got better after that point, but I doubt it.

The acting is completely over-the-top, it feels more like a Christmas pantomime than a film. The dialogue is stilted, especially when spoken by "English" characters, it just sounds false & forced.

The whole plot feels cliched and predictable, if the characters were sincere & engaging this could possibly be overlooked, but this is not the case. Cameron Diaz's character is especially annoying & unbelievable.

I'm just very glad & didn't pay to see this at the cinema...

The Holiday : This is a wonderful innocent (ie No offensive swearing) lovely film. It is not supposed to be true to life, which seems to have disappointed some. The acting of all 5 main characters is superb. Jack Black was brilliantly funny, he and Kate Winslet came across as so sincere as did they all. Cameron Diaz and Jude law were totally believable. My family and I thoroughly enjoyed its romance and simplicity. A refreshing change from all the depressing and violent films of today.

MY REVIEW OF THE HOLIDAY : (Synopsis) Two beautiful women, Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz) and Iris Simpkins (Kate Winslet) both find themselves at the end of failed relationships just before Christmas. Amanda decides to take a two week vacation and surfs the internet. She meets Iris online, and they agree to swap their homes for the holidays. Amanda lives in Los Angles and Iris lives in the countryside of Surrey, England. Even though they now have a change of scenery and want no contact with men, they are both still depressed and lonely. But things are about to change when Iris' brother Graham (Jude Law) drops by Iris' house and meets Amanda. On the other side of the world, Iris meets Miles (Jack Black) a film composer. Romance is in the air and sparks are about to fly.

(My Comment) If you want to see a romantic comedy with real chemistry, especially between Cameron Diaz and Jude Law this is one chick flick you must see. This movie is a good date movie that is actually entertaining and sweet. You are actually seeing two love stories instead of one. There is a great subplot of the friendship between Kate Winslet and Eli Wallach's character that will touch your heart. Actually, I enjoyed that part of the movie the best. Overall, the movie was enjoyable to watch with touching and funny scenes throughout the movie. The ending is predictable, but what do you expect, it is a romantic comedy. You will leave the movie feeling good, and isn't that what movies are all about.
